To release the full flavor of saffron before adding it to your food it is best to grind it into a fine powder, so use our traditional mortar and pestle. Place the saffron into the brass mortar and crush it with the pestle. This tool is absolutely necessary for crushing spices.

If it is the one in the photo, it is great. This is the ‘classic’ one that is most commonly found in Persian kitchens. I’ve used many different ones, and this is by far my favorite.
